Phantoms in the night

1845. California is still a colony of Mexico. The local alcalde has closed the port of Monterey to all American ships, and Roger Bardine, U.S. consul, has disappeared. Washington City sends John Hayward, special agent for the U.S. Army, on a secret mission to find Bardine.
