Western Australia in the last century. Political prisoners fleeing in a hostile land - a desperate chase by mounted police - a brutal ex-convict living in secrecy and squalor - these were the harsh dangerous realities of Mary's life. But the mysterious girl who seemed attuned to the wild country was untouched by them - yet a key actor in the savage drama of a nation coming into being. LUCY WALKER—with a difference. Famed for her romantic novels of life in Australia today, Lucy Walker has become a favorite writer around the world. Now Beagle presents a different side of Lucy Walker, with this powerful historical novel - a harsher, more forthright story than her readers have come to expect, but as vivid in its depiction of life in a fascinating country.
