New Zealand socio-economic index 1996

The development of the NZSEI-91, including the construction of the index using 1991 Census data, and its validation with indicators of health drawn from the 1992/1993 New Zealand Household Health Survey, is summarised in Section 1, along with issues that emerged during the development of this initial version. These comprised difficulties in including those in part-time and self-employment, as well as individuals outside the labour market. Addressing these issues, together with the need to update the NZSEI-91 in line with recent Census data, constituted the primary rationale for the current research.
