The study is a collection of economic and occupational data obtained from original manuscript returns for the 1850 and 1860 United States federal censuses. A sample was taken from each of four Midwestern cities: Chicago, Illinois, Cincinnati, Ohio, Galena, Illinois, and Indianapolis, Indiana. The 1850 sample includes employed males fifteen years old or older, while the 1860 records include a sample of all employed persons fifteen years old or older. Variables include the value of real property and personal property owned, occupation, place of birth, and several demographic variables.
