Bad Magic

by Pseudonymous Bosch · Bad Books series · Grades 4-7 · Ages Ages 8-12

Clay is blamed for writing strange words on a school wall and is sent to a remote camp called Earth Ranch. On an island with odd rules, volcanoes, and maybe real magic, Clay tries to figure out what is really happening.

Key vocabulary

  • Writing or drawings made on a wall or other public place. In the story, strange words on a wall cause big trouble.

  • Far away from most people and places. A remote island can feel hard to reach and full of secrets.

  • A mountain that can sometimes let out hot melted rock, ash, or steam. Volcanoes make the island setting feel exciting and unusual.

  • Hard to explain or understand. A mysterious clue makes you want to keep reading.

  • An adult who helps guide kids at a camp or school. Counselors make rules, lead activities, and try to help campers.

  • Something that tricks your eyes or mind. A magic trick can be an illusion if it looks impossible but has a secret.

  • To think someone may have done something wrong. Clay becomes a suspect when people think he wrote the strange words.

  • What people think or say about someone. A bad reputation can make others judge you before they know the truth.
